FamilyWize Helps 10 Million Save a Billion!

When a FamilyWize user’s son from California first moved in with her, he was on a medication not covered by her insurance. To help manage the costs for the prescription, she used her Free FamilyWize Prescription Savings Card and the FamilyWize Drug Price Lookup Tool to enter the medication and dosage. She then “price shopped” for the nearest pharmacy with the lowest price.

The result: She saved more than $60!

“This truly helped us by keeping our costs down so we could afford the medication and make sure he was still getting the assistance he needed to keep him healthy.”

This story is inspiring but not uncommon because, as of this year, we have now helped more than ten million people save a total of more than one billion dollars on the costs of their prescription medications.

Here’s another great story: We heard from another FamilyWize user who, after losing his health insurance, went to his local pharmacist who processed his FamilyWize card with his prescription.

“My cost went from $180 to $37! Not only do I use the card for most prescriptions, I give the information to friends, family, and my patients. I cannot help but to share this information to anyone who does not have prescription coverage.”

And another loyal card user wrote us this after visiting her pharmacist; “When I asked what my cost would be I was told $129.00. WOW!!! I then handed them my FamilyWize card and asked them to please check now. The new cost with my FamilyWize card was $48.00. Thanks, FamilyWize!”

Many people are surprised when they learn that these discounts are possible without paying a dime for the FamilyWize card. But as these three customers testify, it’s true. The free FamilyWize card’s discounts on prescriptions is available to anyone from nationwide – uninsured, insured or underinsured. By simply printing the FamilyWize card online or downloading the app, then showing it at your pharmacy, you can get the lowest possible price on your prescriptions.

Over 60,000 pharmacies accept the FamilyWize card and app, including Walgreens, Kmart, CVS, Rite Aid, Costco, Walmart, Albertsons, and more! Do you have your own FamilyWize savings story to tell? If so, please share it with us because we always love hearing the good news!

Five Reasons to Get the Flu Shot - And Save!

Here comes flu season – is your family ready? Although flu season peaks from December through March, now is the time to prepare by taking preventative measures that will keep your family – and those around you – healthy this year.

The most certain way to protect yourself against the flu is the flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for anyone six months of age or older.

Of course, many of us come up with excuses to avoid getting the shot – no time, a fear of needles, or “you never get sick.” Well, toss those excuses aside because there are plenty of good reasons for making the flu shot a priority this year.
  1. Studies show that the flu vaccination works! For most, it effectively prevents contraction of the flu. Save your sick days for another time!
  2. Some people do still get the flu despite having had the flu shot; however, the vaccination often makes the illness milder and more manageable.
  3. When you get the vaccine, you are not only protecting yourself from the flu, you are also protecting those around you, especially those who may be more vulnerable to the flu, such as the very young, the very old, and those whose immune systems are already compromised by certain medical conditions (many of whom cannot receive the vaccination themselves). For these individuals, the flu can be more serious or even deadly. According to the CDC, during recent flu seasons, between 80- 90% of flu-related deaths occurred in people 65 years and older.
  4. Flu vaccination has been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization from more serious flu outcomes. The CDC reports that the flu vaccine reduced children’s risk of flu-related pediatric intensive care unit admission by a whopping 74% during flu season. Another study showed that the flu vaccination resulted in a 71% reduction in flu-related hospitalizations among adults, and even greater among older adults.
  5. The flu shot helps protect women during pregnancy, and it even protects their babies for up to six months after they are born.
If you don’t get your flu shot due to cost, we can help. In fact, we can also help alleviate the cost of flu-related medications. There are many ways to save; for example:
We hope that you and your family stay healthy this flu season!

Summer Saving Tips for the Whole Family

With the summer season quickly approaching, everyone wants to find ways to relax, have fun, and enjoy the season with family and friends. But can you do that without breaking the bank? Of course! Check out these summer saving tips for the whole family.

Entertainment

  • Find ways to have fun locally. Parks and recreation centers offer no- or low-cost camps, activities, and events throughout the summer months. Check out your local event calendar for details.
  • Rather than plan a vacation, which probably includes the expense of travel, a hotel stay, entrance to attractions, and meals, allow each family member to choose a day trip or activity to enjoy. By having fun closer to home, at least part of the vacation expense can be eliminated.
  • Use your local library. Not only can you and family member stock up on books for summer reading, but most libraries now offer movies, music, games, and tickets to area museums that can be borrowed, too. In addition, check out your library’s calendar of events for fun activities to enjoy, usually at no cost.

Food

  • Plant a garden this summer. It’s a great activity for the entire family, plus it helps you save on produce costs, too. Do you have a small yard, or no yard at all? No problem! Container gardens are a great option for small spaces.
  • Grill at home rather than eating out. Enjoy the summer grilling season by trying new recipes that your family will enjoy. Incorporate the produce grown in your garden, when possible.
  • Host a block party or potluck dinner. Encourage a greater sense of community in your neighborhood by bringing neighbors together. It’s a great way to socialize and enjoy a range of foods, while keeping entertaining costs down.

More Ideas

  • Teach your kids how they can enjoy “new” clothing from thrift stores and even garage sales. Since the summer season is especially short and kids outgrow clothing so quickly, buying secondhand clothing is a great way to shop for some new-to-you clothing without overspending.
  • Bike or walk as much as possible. Leave the car at home when you can. Not only will you experience savings, but you’ll also benefit from the exercise. Check out more here.
  • Energy costs can be particularly high in the summer months. But, there are ways to save, enlisting the help of your family members. For instance, remind your kids to turn off lights, appliances, and electronic devices when not in use. Keep your air conditioning set to 78 degrees as a rule of thumb. You might consider not running the AC when no one is home to help with summer savings. Check out this site for more energy saving tips.
  • Save money at the pharmacy. While certain illnesses, including the flu, are common in winter, others, including allergies and ear infections are common in summer months.

The FamilyWize Prescription Savings Card provides an average savings of 43% on medications! Anyone can request a card by printing one at www.FamilyWize.org/card or by calling 1-800-222-2818.

FamilyWize also has a drug lookup tool. Before leaving your home to pick up your medication, taking a minute to look up the pharmacy with the best price can help you save significantly at the pharmacy.

Both the savings card and the drug lookup took are available in the free FamilyWize app: Click here to download it to an Apple product or click here to download it for Android.

Remember: the summer season is a great time to spend quality time with family and friends. At the same time, you can find plenty of ways to save! Enjoy!

The Best Ways to Save on Prescription Medication

The rising cost of prescription medications is a huge burden for many Americans. The good news is that there are ways you can take control. Here are some great tips that can help you save money on your prescription medication.

Go Generic

Whenever the option is available, you can save substantially by choosing generic drugs over brand-name. Generic drugs have the same ingredients, dosage, intended use, side effects, and strength as the original drug. The only difference is that it’s usually much cheaper than its brand-name counterparts – in many cases, 30-80% less!

Compare Prices At Your Local Pharmacies

The cost of a drug can vary from one pharmacy to the next, sometimes significantly. When choosing a pharmacy, compare before you commit.

The FamilyWize  Drug Price Lookup Tool is the perfect tool for this. You can use the tool to check and compare prices at different pharmacies. Simply enter your zip code and the name of the drug you’ve been prescribed, and the tool will search your neighborhood, giving you a list of where the drug is available, and at what price.

Use a Prescription Savings Card

Our free FamilyWize Prescription Savings Card saved an average of 42% off your retail prescription costs, or $29.14 per prescription, based on our data from 2014. In some cases, the savings with the card go as high as 75%! The FamilyWize Prescription Savings Card can oftentimes give you a better deal than your insurance, so whenever you go to the pharmacy, always show your FamilyWize card in addition to your insurance, and ask your pharmacist for the lowest price.

Use Common Savings Strategies

What works for saving money on general consumer purchases may also work with prescription purchases. For example:
  • Check out the pharmacy counters at big-box stores and club stores – they may offer better discounts than you can get through insurance.
  • If it’s a drug that you need long-term and that doesn’t expire too quickly, look for seasonal discounts or sales and stock up.
  • Look for offers and special deals from your local pharmacies.
  • If your insurance company doesn’t cover your medicine, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about alternatives that may be just as effective but cost less money.
  • See if your insurer has a preferred pharmacy or mail order service to help you get the best prices.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your medicines to see if you can eliminate any of them safely.
Remember, no matter which strategy you use to save, taking your medication is crucial to staying healthy. A 2013 Consumer Reports poll revealed that more than 50 percent of us are taking potentially dangerous risks to reduce costs associated with our prescriptions, such as skipping doses, taking expired drugs, or not filling our prescriptions at all.

For more common sense tips on prescription drug safety and cost savings strategies, check out our free Live Healthy, Live Smart® eBook. We’re offering you this free booklet of tips to celebrate our 10th anniversary of helping individuals, families, and communities save money on their medication.

FamilyWize Turns 10!

October is a major milestone in FamilyWize history - it's our 10th birthday! Since 2005, we have worked tirelessly to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities.

Originally, we were only focused on Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, where our headquarters is located. However, as our operations have expanded, so has our focus; we now provide prescription savings to consumers in every state!

We are able to provide these discounts by way of our free FamilyWize Prescription Savings Card and our extensive network of partner programs. Today, that network includes the United Way, the National Council on Aging, and the American Heart Association, among others.

With help from these partners, we’ve been able to help more than 8.8 million people save over $925 million dollars on their medication costs.

Ray Bullman, Executive Vice President of the National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE), another FamilyWize partner, says, “FamilyWize has a long tradition of delivering value to consumers and raising awareness of the need to talk about medications, from access to affordability to advocacy, through their partners. We congratulate them on their successful 10-year milestone and look forward to working together to promote safe, smart prescription use.”

To make this anniversary even more significant, we’ve just launched a new educational campaign in support of "Talk About Your Medicines Month," established 30 years ago by NCPIE in an effort to promote the wise use of medicines through trusted communication for better health.

The centerpiece of our campaign is the release of our Live Healthy. Live Smart.® eBook. This free educational guide provides valuable information about prescription medications — from what you should ask your pharmacist, to how to get the best prices at the pharmacy, to how to dispose of your medication safely.

"We are thrilled to partner with NCPIE as part of Talk About Your Medicines month and our own 10th Anniversary. We believe that it is critical that all consumers not only have access to the medications they need, but also have access to information on issues surrounding prescription medications, whether that be the importance of taking your prescriptions regularly or how to save on prescription medication costs,” said Joseph Sanginiti, President and COO of FamilyWize.

To get your free eBook of helpful pharmacy tips and advice, click here to download it or read it online. The eBook also includes a FamilyWize Prescription Savings Card, which is accepted at over 60,000 pharmacies nationwide and can help you save an average of 42% on prescription medication. Here's to another decade of helping people save!
